What a cookie is, and why there are barely any here

A cookie is a small file a site leaves in your browser and that gets sent back to the server on every visit. They exist to remember things: an open session, a language, or a trail of where you've been.

Space Discovery sets no cookies today, neither its own nor anyone else's. The only thing we store is your answer to this notice, and it isn't even a cookie: it lives in the browser's local storage, which never leaves your device. We declare it here anyway, because the law says “cookies and similar technologies”, and this is one of them.

The only thing we store

This is the complete list. If we ever add anything else, it will appear here before it is switched on.

• Name: sd-cookie-consent
• Type: local storage (localStorage), not a cookie
• Purpose: remembering whether you accepted, rejected or customised, and on what date
• Lifetime: until you change your preferences or clear your browser data
• Who sees it: only your browser — it is never sent to any server, ours included

The three categories

The notice lets you decide by category. Here they are, and here is exactly what each one does today.

• Necessary — the essentials for the site to work and to remember your decision. They can't be turned off, and they are the only ones in use right now.
• Analytics — would measure, in aggregate, which sections get visited and from what kind of device. No analytics tool is installed, so today this option switches on nothing at all.
• Marketing — would measure campaigns or serve personalised advertising. We use none. The switch exists so that if it ever changes, your decision has already been made beforehand rather than afterwards.

Who else is involved

None of these leave anything in your browser, but it's only fair that you know they're there.

• Vercel, the hosting — serves the pages and records every request in its logs: IP address, browser, page requested and time. That's a server log, not a cookie: nothing is stored on your device.
• Cosmo, the AI guide — when you write to it, your question travels to our server and from there to the model that writes the answer. We don't store it. The privacy policy covers this in detail.
• The typefaces — they are downloaded when the site is built and served from our own domain, so your browser never requests anything from Google when you visit.
• The NASA, ESA and CSA images — they are hosted right here, not embedded from elsewhere.
• There are no embedded videos, maps or social media buttons: those are the three routes by which a site ends up serving third-party cookies without meaning to.

Changing your mind

Your decision isn't final. Change it with the button below, or from “Cookie preferences” at the bottom of any page.

You can also clear the site's data from your browser settings: that removes the record of your decision and the notice will come back.

If this changes

If we ever add analytics, advertising or any other technology that stores information in your browser, we will update this page and ask you again before switching it on. Consent given for one thing does not cover a different one.
